''Just when I finally become accustomed to things, you take away what little I have.'' In desperation I turn into a cocoon and await the end. Days later, I find myself transformed into a beautiful butterfly and able to fly!

OUR DAY CARE TEAM CARES
NOT ONLY FOR OUR PATIENTS BUT FOR THEIR LITTLE ONES AS WELL
During these stressful times it is particularly difficult for the children of our patients to deal with everything going on around them. Not only are they having to adjust to living with Covid but also having to come to terms with the prospect of loss and having to deal with a loved one at home who is suffering with a terminal illness. At times they may feel afraid and somewhat bewildered and at a loss as to what the future may hold for them. With that in mind our Day Care Team recently held a Craft Morning especially for the young children of patients under our care to offer them the opportunity to enjoy a change of environment with others their own age and to express their concerns if they so wished with our Social Worker or with one of our Nursing Sisters on hand. The children had a great time jumping with enthusiasm into varies crafts activities including planting up small containers made from LP records painstakingly baked in the oven by Liz Jones one of our Care Team volunteers. Once planted and decorated the children could present these and their other imaginative creations as gifts to either their family members or friends. We were blessed with a beautiful sunny morning which the children enjoyed outside in our garden and to end the morning they were treated to a selection of tasty home made eats, sweets and refreshments.

''DONATION BIN'' PROJECT''
In an endeavour to collect donations of clothing for resale in our two charity shops St Luke's Hospice West Coast has embarked on a ''Donation Bin'' project. The idea is that these bins would become a permanent feature in Garden Nursery outlets within our area of operation.
We have started off our ''Donation Bin'' project at Super Plants Nursery at No 1 Link Road just off Vryburger Avenue in Bothasig, so when next you pop into your local nursery please look out for the blue wheelie bins with the Hospice sticker on the front and drop off your unwanted clothing to support your local Hospice.
Funds raised go directly towards the care of our patients! St Luke's Hospice West Coast relies on donations from the public and the income generated from our two Hospice Charity shops.and we trust that you will support this initiative and that in due course we may introduce bins into other exciting venues near you. If you have access to any suitable venue to introduce one of our ''Donation Bins'' please call our Hospice office.

In March 1980 the first formal meeting of the directors of St Luke's Hospice took place following the visit to Cape Town Dame Cecily Saunders, the world renowned initiator of the hospice concept. The organization was officially incorporated as a non-profit company on 13 August 1980, to care for all people in need of its services regardless of their ability to pay, or of the class, colour or creed.
St Luke's started working in the in patient care field in 1982. At this time the St Luke's Hospice offices were situated at the Vincent Palotti Hospital in Pinelands. Then they were moved to a home in Trill Road Observatory but it became obvious that the premises were too small and with the help of the Lombardi Family Trust in 1985 the present Kenilworth property was acquired.
